In 1992, Robert Rosenthal published an article in Healthcare Financial Management regarding the financing and ownership of medical office buildings. Rosenthal writes “It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that physicians began to locate their offices above a bank or retail store or, in larger cities, in multi-use office buildings. By the beginning of World War II, a number of specialized buildings had been erected exclusively for use by physicians -- including some on hospital campuses.”
